Johannesburg is Africa’s most visited city, drawing more than 4,5m international tourists a year – and now the CBD is also attracting more South Africans as it steadily regains its popularity as a fashionable and practical place to live, work and play.
Thanks largely to the regeneration efforts of the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) in co-operation with private investors such as Amdec, Afhco, Citiq and the pioneering Urban Ocean as well as Maboneng developer Propertuity, the CBD now offers a wealth of stylish apartments to let in trendy and secure buildings, many of which offer additional facilities such as pools, children’s play areas, gyms, laundries and business centres as well as rooftop gardens and entertainment areas.
Rentals for these apartments currently start at around R3000 a month for one-bedroom units and around R4000 for two-bedroom units and range up to around R14 000 a month for penthouse units boasting spectacular city views.

In conjunction with the Johannesburg City Council, large public sections of the CBD have also been cleaned up and redeveloped to provide an attractive and safe living environment for an increasing number of career singles and couples who love living close to their workplaces and within easy reach of shops, restaurants, clubs, theatres, museums, galleries and medical facilities as well as modern public transport networks such as the Gautrain and the Rea Vaya bus rapid transport system.
Rooms to let and bachelor/ studio apartments in the CBD are also a popular with students at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Doornfontein campus and many other tertiary institutions in the area including the Boston City Campus and Business College, Damelin, the Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology, the Falcon Business Institute and the Central Johannesburg FET College. Rentals for such units currently start at around R1300 a month and range up to about R3300.
Having fallen into decay following large-scale business decentralisation in the 1980s and 90s, Johannesburg is now also home to hundreds of new enterprises – and entrepreneurs – in its specialist Fashion and Jewel districts, the NewTown cultural precinct and Maboneng, which has arguably done the most to cement New Urbanism in the city and make it glamorous once more to live in the heart of the CBD, right among offices, workshops, retail outlets and entertainment venues of all sorts.
Situated in the south-east corner of downtown Johannesburg, this iconic precinct has grown up around the converted industrial building Arts on Main and now encompasses more than 40 mixed-use buildings such as the Museum of African Design (MOAD), the Arts on Main creative centre, the Main Street Life and Hallmark House residential and hotel buildings, many trendy restaurants and one-of-a-kind shops, a Sunday market, and a string of other redeveloped industrial and office buildings with a mix of apartments and creative spaces such as Revolution House, Fox Street Studios, The Main Change, Artisan Lofts, Urban Fox, Rocket Factory and Craftsmen’s Ship.
Studio and one-bedroom apartments in these buildings range in size from around 33sqm to about 82sqm and are available to rent at prices from R4000 to around R9000. There are also larger units and penthouses available at rentals from R12 000 a month up to R22 000 a month.
