The historic suburb of Quigney in central East London is home to many students and holidaymakers as well as young working people and families, and accordingly offers a very wide selection of accommodation to let, from hotels and guesthouses to large homes.
Those managed by Trafalgar include rooms and flats to let as well as well-kept houses with ocean views.
Quigney was established in the 1880s, and renting a home here offers the combined advantages of a very central location adjacent to the city’s CBD and a beachfront lifestyle. Many of the apartments to let here are just a short distance from Eastern Beach, which is popular with surfers and families and offers water slides, children’s playgrounds and many other attractions.

These include the renowned Windmill Roadhouse and the Buccaneers sports pub as well as a string of luxury hotels and popular restaurants along the Esplanade, and the International Convention Centre, which is only 15 minutes’ drive from East London Airport and is set up to host exhibitions, banquets, business breakfasts, and cocktail functions in addition to conferences, seminars and product launches.
Other points of interest in the area include the German Settlers Memorial that stands tall on Signal Hill, the Orient Theatre, the Buffalo Park cricket stadium and the Aquarium on the Esplanade, where you can get a telescopic view of Southern Right wales swimming in the ocean during their annual migration, or enjoy a seal show while also supporting the rehabilitation of marine animals that have been the victims of distress, pollution and disasters.
However, one and two-bedroom flats to let in this area are in high demand not only among holidaymakers and business tourists but among long-term tenants too, because of their proximity to many other amenities such as health and fitness centres, shops malls, banks, medical facilities and restaurants. Virgin Active and Body25 both have branches here, while shops include many independent outlets and the Spar supermarkets on Moore St and Inverleith Terrace. The nearest malls are Central Square in the CBD and Gilwell Crossing on the R72.
The East London campus of Fort Hare university is also in Quigney, located between Fleet Street and the harbour to the south, and there is accordingly also great demand here for student flats and rooms to let. The campus currently has around 5000 full-time students and also caters for long-distance learning.
The Port of East London is located at the mouth of the Buffalo River and is SA’s only remaining river port. It mostly handles grain, vehicle and container exports, although it is also attracting an increasing number of cruise liners. Barge cruises up the river start from Latimer’s Landing on the east bank.
